Simon Pegg is Dennis an everyman who was about to marry his pregnant fiancé Libby (Thandie Newton) when he suddenly got cold feet and literally ran away leaving her at the aisle. Five years later and Libby is now with fit, motivated, high achiever and marathon runner Whit (‘The Simpson’s’ Hank Azaria). Dennis’ son Jake is becoming more estranged from him each day and he realises what he has lost and is determined to win back his family.

Underachieving Dennis enters a marathon to prove that he can commit to something and finish it proving to Libby he is not a quitter as Hank has contemptuously labelled him. Can Dennis succeed?

This is one of those typically British comedies that crop up now and again, a sort of ‘heart warming’ tale that is supposed to make everyone feel good inside. It is ably directed by ‘Friends’ David Schwimmer and moves at an easy pace. There are plenty of comic mishaps as Dennis tries to get his flabby body back into shape. Pegg is well supported in the comedy stakes by Dylan Moran playing his best friend Gordon and by Harish Patel as Dennis’ landlord Mr Goshdashtidar. The relationship between Dennis and his son convinces, however his relationship with Libby seems a little flat.

There are plenty of funny lines and sight gags and it is enjoyable, but it is let down by an ending that you can see coming from a mile away. Viewers that stay the course will be rewarded with an amusing but predictable British comedy.
