New year, new beginnings. Sounds corny, but we all like to feel a sense of renewal, rebirth or catharsis at times. New Years is always an interesting time whether you are celebrating to excess or quietly reflecting. Some people think of it as 'just another date' but I have always enjoyed the feeling of taking stock of everything and feeling that I can move on with a clean slate.

This last new year's eve has been particularly poignant as it marked the end of one decade and the start of another. The noughties were fast moving and in your face. We were being hit with so much information and new developments at a frightening rate. The World has moved on so much as well.

My hopes for the new decade are that things slow down. We learn to take our time, to be patient, more measured, understanding and grateful for what we have. Less consumerist and selfish, not thinking only in terms of defining everything in relationship to ourselves but by seeeing the bigger picture.

I am looking forward to all the usual fun stuff: Sports (read The Six Nations, The World Cup in South Africa, Moto GP, WSB, BSB, Boxing), Music and Film. But most of all I hope this decade changes the way we see and perceive things. I don't mean that we should all meditate and gaze at our navels, but I just hope there is less 'me, me, me' and more 'us, us, us.'

Hopefully it will be a case of lesson learnt rather than history repeating itself. A naive sentiment perhaps, but it would be nice if things really could move on.

Anyway, whatever the 2010s bring I wish everyone a Happy New Year and Decade!
