From writers Bob DeRosa and Ted Griffin this comedy is a mixture of two genres: the spy movie and the rom-com. Ashton Kutcher is Spencer Aimes, a spy on a last job in Nice, France. Here he meets Jen Kornfeldt (‘Knocked Up’ and ‘Grey’s Anatomy’s’ Katherine Heigl) on holiday with her parents. The two fall in love and later marry. The action then moves on three years later to perfect American suburbia where Spencer is in a regular job and Jen is blissfully happy in her marriage, totally unaware of the life her husband used to lead as a secret agent. Until now…
With a bounty of $20 million on his head, Spencer is suddenly under threat from all areas. He cannot trust anyone, even seemingly friendly neighbours and work colleagues. Jen gets involved and the truth comes out with explosive and comic consequences. This kind of deadly cat and mouse game with the most unlikely of assassins has been done by Hollywood many times before. The film reminded of similar efforts like ‘Bird on a Wire’, ‘Grosse Point Blank’ and ‘Mr and Mrs Smith.’ There are some good action sequences and there is good chemistry between the two leads and Tom Selleck and Catherine O’Hara do well in supporting roles as Jen’s parents. That said it never quite convinces as either a comedy or an action film. Things look a little strained at times and while the intentions behind this were probably good it never lives up to its early promise. Kutcher is a little too boyish even in his early thirties to convince as a tough former secret agent. Heigl yet again puts in a spirited performance but it looks like she knows she is dealing with inferior material. The whole thing is a little lazy to be honest and there are too many cringeworthy, corny moments. Predictable and utterly forgettable this one is probably better suited as a DVD or BluRay rental for a Friday night, not a terrible film but there are plenty of superior films out there this summer to see. |
