‘4 girls, 3 days, 2 cities, 1 chance’ so the tagline of this film goes. Written, co-directed and starring Noel (‘Kidulthood’ and ‘Adulthood’) Clarke this is a modern day British thriller set in London and New York charting three extraordinary days in the lives of four friends: Joanne (Emma Roberts), Cassandra (Tamsin Egerton), Kerrys (Shanika Warren-Markland) and Shannon (Ophelia Lovibond).
The plot throws this tough, independent quartet and their humdrum existences into the centre of an international diamond heist and is told from each of their different perspectives. It is a technique that has been used to great effect before by Akira Kurosawa in ‘Rashomon’ and Quentin Tarantino in ‘Jackie Brown.’ From its opening frame right up to the end credits this is full of directorial flourishes, sharp edits, snappy dialogue and interesting visuals. Thanks to the spirited performances and editing this manages to hold your attention. It is also packed with cameos from the likes of Sean Pertwee, Kate Magowan, Ben Miller, Kevin (‘Clerks’) Smith, Alexander Siddig and Ben Drews (better known as the singer Plan B). Michelle Ryan pops up again in yet another action femme fatale part that she seems to specialise in these days. It is not perfect however (what is?) and at times it does seem a little contrived. Some of the action sequences fit a little too neatly and it comes dangerously close to cliché. That said it is a big relief to see someone like Clarke who is bold enough to take risks and produce a British film like this instead of the usual ‘safe’ fare we are used to. As the action unfolded I felt reminded of the US film ‘Go’ (1999) and with its depiction of the club scene, language and culture references it is no secret that its target audience is late teens to twentysomethings. With that in mind, I anticipate it will be a big hit with that group, but a modest one everywhere else. |
