With a new director in Matthew Vaughn and a screenplay written by Vaughn, Ashley Miller, Zack Stentz and Jane Goldman (the team that brought us Kick-Ass) X-Men: First Class promises a fresh take on the popular franchise. This prequel focuses on the relationship of Professor Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and Erik Lehnsherr better known as Magneto (Michael Fassbender). Before the two became arch enemies they were friends and this film charts Charles’ efforts to start up a school for humans with superhuman abilities, among them his friend Erik. Villain duties this time go to Sebastian Shaw (Kevin Bacon) the mutant leader of the shady Hellfire Club.

This is essentially an origins film but a stylishly done one. Of course this being the height of the Cold War there is a retro look and feel reminiscent of classic 60s film Dr Strangelove (especially the war room scene). It manages to explore why Charles and Erik formed different opinions that led to them becoming adversaries while simultaneously entertaining the audience with its great ensemble cast and impressive CGI.

Everything has a fresh feel to it and it is more character based rather than relying just on big explosions and mayhem. There are familiar characters but also plenty of new ones among them: Riptide, Azazel, Angel Salvadore, Emma Frost, Banshee, Darwin and Havoc. Thankfully the strong script manages to be coherent and allows McAvoy and Fassbender to add much needed gravitas to proceedings as it moves at a fast assured pace.

This is a surprisingly original and unique entry in what could have been a tired edition to a franchise that was in danger of running out of steam and into self-parody. There are plenty of references and in-jokes and even an unexpected cameo. Most importantly of all this is great fun and should appease the hardcore fan-boys as well as entertain the rest of us. Whether it spawns more sequels is irrelevant as this deserves kudos as a stand-alone action adventure.
