A contaminated burger turns the American population into flesh eating zombies; this film picks up events two months later where life for the few uninfected survivors proves to be a constant struggle. The films central protagonist and narrator is a likeable ‘everyman’ geek, Columbus (‘Roger Dodger’s’ Jesse Eisenberg) who lives by his ‘Rules of Survival.’ These rules provide the viewer with plenty of comic examples and scenes. On the road the awkward and shy Columbus meets up with archetypal tough guy and twenty first century cowboy Tallahassee (played with gusto and glee by Woody Harrelson).

Columbus is travelling from Texas to Ohio in search of his parents, all Tallahassee wants is a twinkie (a junk food snack). This mismatched and unlikely duo then bump into femme fatale Wichita (‘Superbad’s’ Emma Stone) and her feisty twelve year old sister, Little Rock (‘Little Miss Sunshine’s’ Abigail Breslin). This dysfunctional family unit travel across the remaining wastelands of America, with the girls trying to reach the Zombie free utopia of ‘Pacific Playland.’

Of course in this environment of chaos, mayhem and uncertainty things can get mixed up and you have to constantly be on your toes to avoid being a crazed zombie’s next meal!

I approached this effort with caution feeling that it was simply going to be a weaker US imitation of Simon Pegg’s brilliantly funny ‘Shaun of the Dead.’ When the end credits rolled I confess to having been thoroughly entertained. This film is simply a laugh a minute thrill ride thanks to exceptional performances from the four leads who are clearly having a blast; an excellently sharp and witty script from writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese and jumpy, paranoid, suspenseful direction from Ruben Fleischer.

There is gore aplenty and some unforgettable visuals: I never thought I would see zombie children attacking their terrified mother in a film until now! The humour is wonderfully dark and subversive and I’m sure the film will stand up to repeat viewings as there is plenty going on screen. There are also two cameos from the ‘Queen of Scream’ Amber Heard and a veteran ‘A list’ comic actor to look out for.

With a short running time this one moves at breakneck speed and is full of incident, boasting a sharp witty script with a world-weariness about it as well as a lot of original and memorable moments. A perfect blend of horror and comedy and an antidote to anyone who feels life is getting a little too staid and boring.
