The UK gets its premiere of the hit US show ‘Burn Notice’ season 4 on 24 August and as a fan of the show I cannot recommend this enough.
It stars Jeffrey Donovan as Michael Westen, a seasoned spy who finds himself suddenly ‘burned’ which loosely translated means cut off and discredited by his paymasters. Seemingly abandoned and on his own he survives by doing dangerous jobs for the desperate, helpless people of Miami where he now hides.
He is not on his own as help comes in the form of his mother (an excellent and on form Sharon Gless from ‘Cagney and Lacey’ fame as a world weary and doting parent), a trusted former FBI informer Sam Axe (cult horror actor Bruce Campbell who was born for this role) and ex girlfriend Fiona (Gabrielle Anwar who manages to convey toughness and vulnerability in equal measure). Not only does this show boast a fantastic ensemble cast who have great chemistry together it is packed with stunts, explosions, fights, car cases and enough scheming and plotting to leave Bond, Bourne and Bauer on the ropes! One of the shows great strengths is its ability to pull in great guest stars like ‘Frasier’s’ John Mahoney as a spy master, Tricia Helfer of ‘Battlestar Galactica’, Tim Matheson and Moon Bloodgood (who can currently be seen on FX in ‘Falling Skies) and many more. Each episode has a new set of problems for Michael and friends to solve or overcome against the bigger canvas of trying to discover who ‘burned’ him and why. Disguises, hardware, gadgets and comedy abound and it is clear that everyone involved is having a great time. It is like an ‘A-Team’ for adults and holds its own with Bond, Bourne and Bauer without the excessive violence and jaw clenching – this has its tongue firmly in its cheek. If you find your Wednesday nights insufferably dull then this is the perfect antidote and pick me up. Strap yourself in for the ride and...Enjoy! ‘Burn Notice’ Season 4 begins on 24 August for an 18 week run and is on the FX channel at 9pm and FX plus at 10pm (as well as many repeats!) |
