The UK premiere of ‘The Cape’ is likely to divide audiences between those who believe that the market has been saturated with superheroes and vigilantes and those who cannot get enough of the genre. ‘The Cape’ sees cop Vince Faraday (David Lyons) framed for murder. He goes off the radar and re-emerges as a vigilante hero known only as ‘The Cape.’

The series is set in the fictional Palm City, California (LA anyone?) and sees The Cape battle it out with a super villain known only as ‘Chess.’ Faraday accepts an offer to work for a private security firm named ARK owned by billionaire entrepreneur Peter Fleming (James Frain).

ARK is petitioning Palm City to privatise the police and public safety operations (shades of OCP and Robocop?) after Faraday has been taken under the wing by ‘The Carnival of Crime’ a travelling circus and bank robbery ring lead by Max Malini (talented veteran character actor David Keith) Faraday is trained by Malini to use the special black cape against his foes.

With the help of investigative blogger Orwell (Firefly’s Summer Glau) Faraday fights Palm City’s corruption and attempts to clear his name by adopting his son’s favourite comic book hero, ‘The Cape.’ It does sound clichéd and unoriginal and has had a mixed response in the US. After low ratings it has been cancelled. So why am I recommending this show I hear you ask? Simply because it could be another one of those cult shows that gains a following regardless of what the masses think.

I feel sorry for Summer Glau who is a talented actress renowned for portraying action heroines in television series like ‘Firefly’, ‘The Sarah Connor Chronicles’ and ‘Doll’s House.’ She just can’t seem to catch a break! At the very least this one should be a curio and as I always say, don’t always believe the critics! This will be like the marmite of television but may actually be quite good. Why not give it a try?

‘The Cape’ starts on Thursday on the Sy Fy Channel at 8pm.
